Valentine’s Day is a romantic comedy designed for all ages. The all-star cast includes popular young stars like Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner, while distinguished actresses like Julia Roberts and Kathy Bates bring experience to the mix. The plot follows each of the characters through the twists and turns of their Valentine’s Day. The movie’s main character is Reed Bennett (Ashton Kutcher), a likeable florist who proposes to his girlfriend (Jessica Alba) on Valentine’s Day morning. The fact that everyone is surprised by her acceptance doesn’t bode well for their relationship.

Taylor Swift plays Felicia, the dumb cheerleader, who is actually a “dancer,” and Taylor Lautner is Willy, her sports obsessed boyfriend. Both play their roles with charm and a successful tongue-in-cheek approach. Julia Fitzpatrick (Jennifer Garner) is the best friend of Reed, and the girlfriend of a successful doctor, Harrison Copeland (Patrick Dempsey). Dr. Harrison also has a wife, which comes as a not-so-shocking surprise. Anne Hathaway plays Liz, a woman with a new boyfriend that she loves (Topher Grace,) and also a dubious side job. Sean Jackson (Eric Dane) is a quarterback who has passed his prime and is being forced to make some heavy decisions, on the field and off. He is helped by Kara Monahan (Jessica Biel), his neurotic personal assistant who throws anti-Valentine’s Day parties at Indian Restaurants and falls for Kelvin Moore (Jaimie Foxx), a wannabe sports reporter unwillingly sent to do a Valentine’s Day special by his boss (Kathy Bates). Captain Kate Hazeltine (Julia Roberts) meets Holden (Bradley Cooper) when she wakes up after falling asleep on his shoulder on a plane. Both of their stories end in love, but not necessarily with who the audience expects.

These are just some of the characters and story lines that are intertwined in a story about couples and singles who make-up and break-up in Valentine’s Day. The star studded cast doesn’t give much time to any one character, which makes it hard to truly care about any of them. The plot is a combined version of Love Actually and He’s Just Not That Into You. The result is an amusing, if predictable and far-fetched, movie about the ups and downs of love.
