Although not a new thing, the music of our time seems more “inappropriate” than that of the past. Freedom of speech basically allows anything to be put out as media that subconsciously affects all of us. Despite the defensiveness we all take to our music and lifestyles, many can see, or admit a direct relationship between them. My opinion of music today is not that it is bad to listen to, just that listeners should be aware of the music’s meanings, and not let the music’s message be louder than their own.
In some cases, I don’t think the problem all lies in the music itself, but instead how people interpret the lyrics and relate them to their own lives. Americans use musicians and artists as role models, whether for the better or not. Fans and followers of particular artists may sometimes find themselves living through messages in lyrics. Sometimes these messages encourage no positive morals or activities, but instead encourage violence or even the degradation of women. Lyrics of many popular rap songs today show little respect to women, use vulgar language, illustrate violence, and encourage substance abuse. These actions are made out to be the “in” thing to do and, unfortunately, some people aren’t strong enough to form their own opinion as to where they stand for those actions. This pressure builds on those that are too insecure to stand confidently in their own personal values. People like this are the poster stories for the “big bad media.” The problem now lies when these unsure individuals look to the media for influence. As a result, the lyrics get into people’s heads and take over, bringing down social standards for many.
Now, despite the negative influences these songs of any genre may present, I do not believe they should be removed from the media. Yes, I’m sure these artists could find better subjects for their lyrics, but after all, it’s all about money to them. If fans find an interest in these negative lyrics, the artists are going to write to where the money is. So instead of focusing on blaming the media for problems in our society, I think we need to learn to look past the negative message, instead of integrating it into our lives.
Although a lot of people use music as something to relate their lives to, sometimes just a relation is better than a replica. Rather than taking all lyrics so literally, be creative with the message you take out of them. Find your own underlying message that means more and fits more true to your individual life. Positive messages can be taken out of any negative story, or at least there is something to be learned. It is up to the listener to interpret the words as they wish.
Music plays a huge part in the life of everyone. Whether it’s in the elevator, shopping at your favorite store, or sitting in your best friend’s car; it’s always there. How we take these songs and their lyrics are different for everyone. That’s the beauty of music; to take something out of it that maybe only you see. Instead of building your life around the lyrics, allow the lyrics to frame your life.
