Not all people know the term of obesity by heart; they only know what it looks like. Obesity is used to describe body weight that is a lot greater than what can be considered healthy. If you are obese, you have a much higher amount of fat than lean muscle mass. In the United States today, there are 39% of people who are obese. While in 1990, the obesity rate was only 22%. In the observing process, there are more women who are obese than men. There are many myths about obesity that shouldn’t be believed: 65% of Americans are overweight or obese, obesity kills 400,000 Americans annually, obesity will shorten life expectancy, overeating is the primary cause of obesity, and obesity costs Americans $117 billion annually. All of these myths are not true. The next information of obesity would prove the myths wrong. The causes of obesity are using too much alcohol, eating more than the body can take, and/or not getting enough exercise. There are also genetics and thyroid problems that could be a cause of obesity. Obesity can result in a person having diabetes, stroke, heart disease, kidney disease, gallbladder disease, as well as some cancers. The treatment of obesity includes diet systems that are recommended and prescribed by a doctor, you can use steps of your own, or you can use the steps that are listed here. The steps included are eating only at the table. Do not snack while you are watching tv, in bed, driving, or in front of the refrigerator, learning about appropriate portion sizes, consider learning meditation or yoga as a way to manage stress, find ways to socialize and enjoy your friends and family that don’t involve a meal, and/or find a support group or consider psychotherapy to help support you. Exercise will also help you, find a local gym to work out in or ask a friend to take a run with you each morning or night. You can also use medications and herbal remedies as a way to lose weight, though the overall weight loss is limited. Another way is to surgically remove the fat, but it is only an option when it is most needed or it’s the only way. Ways to prevent obesity is to have a healthy diet and regular exercise. Instead of driving a block to get to work or school, walk; and take the stairs instead of the elevator. If you would like more information about obesity, go to health.google.com/health/ref/Obesity.
